How many yards are
there in a mile?
40 years ago Britain converted from imperial measurements to metric
– however, our road signs haven't been updated! A report published
by the UK Metric Association says that we should change half a
million speed and distance signs before the 2012 Olympics (estimated
cost £80 million). Lord Kinnock, former Labour Party Leader, has
said, "our imperial road signs contradict the image of our country
as a modern, multicultural, dynamic place."
I hope Wirral Council takes this into consideration – more than 300
signs are to be upgraded or replaced in the run up to the Open
Championship as part of a £70,000 initiative to improve road safety.
Although the Department of Transport has ruled out the change to
metric, another Government U-turn could end up costing the Wirral a
lot of money – at a time when Wirral's Council tax could rise by
4.46%.
St George – wasn't he the one with the dragon?
I was recently emailed details of a national campaign to make St
George's day a national holiday:
http://www.stgeorgesday.com/voting.asp I'm all for the creation
of bank holidays, we have very few in comparison to some of our
European pals, but why for St George? I know he is our patron saint
(he is also patron saint of Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Portugal,
Germany and Greece to name only a few) and incidentally was probably
born in Turkey!
It seems everyone is looking for an excuse to have an extra day off
– there is even a campaign to have a Liverpool Day on August 28 th
2007 to celebrate Liverpool's 800th birthday (don't worry it would
only be a one off).
Maybe we could have a Tony Blair day when Tony finally decides to
call it a day. Or even a David (call me Dave) Cameron day when the
Conservatives win the next election.
If you can think of any other excuses for an extra day off drop me a
line – otherwise enjoy 23 rd April! (that's St George's day for
those that don't know!)
